Rui Borges has made Sporting’s target clear ahead of their I Liga opener at Estrela da Amadora: the club want to be back winning titles, and nothing less will do. But for Saturday’s trip to the Estádio José Gomes, two notable names are missing from the squad, with Daniel Bragança and Pedro Gonçalves not called up.

“A pressão, para mim, é a mesma. É a de ganhar e fazer o melhor pelo Sporting, de ganhar títulos. Não conseguimos na época passada, queremos muito voltar a ganhá-los, porque, principalmente nos últimos anos, o Sporting tem sido a equipa que mais títulos tem ganho,” he said.
That is an important message at the start of a season that already feels like it carries weight. Sporting are not being asked simply to start well; they are being asked to show that last year’s failure to finish first has not softened the standard.
Squad changes and early selection calls

“É um início de época onde a equipa contrária vai estar supermotivada por defrontar o Sporting e para fazer tudo para roubar pontos. Por isso, a nossa exigência tem de ser máxima,” he said.
That is the practical reality of the first round. Estrela da Amadora spent 2025/26 fighting to avoid another season-long relegation battle, so they will approach this match with energy and urgency. Sporting, by contrast, are trying to start the season as they intend to continue it: with authority, control and a clear title mindset.
