David Raum has described the period after the World Cup as “intensive and very, very exhausting”, saying the criticism around Deutschland and the coach was something he had to process before moving on. Speaking at the end of RB Leipzig’s training camp in Saalfelden, the RB captain made clear that the backlash after Katar left a mark.
Raum’s comments were not just about one difficult tournament. They were also about the wider atmosphere around Deutschland after the third group match, when he noticed the reporting became much more negative. For a player who had lost his regular place during the tournament because of injury, it was a reminder of how quickly the mood can change when results go against a national team.
Raum: “That reminded me of the World Cup in Katar”
Raum linked what happened after the tournament with his own experience during the World Cup in Katar. He said: “Das hat mich an die WM in Katar erinnert.” He also referred to the hostility around the coach, saying: “Auch nach der WM, diese ganze Hetzerei gegen den Trainer.”
That reaction, he suggested, was part of what made the whole period so difficult to digest. Raum said he needed to step back and process it, adding that after such moments there is always the possibility that the tone changes again very quickly: “Schauen wir mal, ob dann wieder ganz schnell von Schwarz auf Weiß gewechselt wird.”
Klopp, Deutschland and Raum’s own future
Raum’s reflections also touched on his future with Deutschland and the possibility of working under Jürgen Klopp. He said: “Wenn ich Teil davon sein darf, würde ich mich natürlich freuen, weil ich auch noch was vorhabe mit Deutschland.”
He was equally positive about Klopp and the energy around him, saying: “Er und sein gesamtes Trainerteam bringen eine geile, sehr positive Energie rein, was mir immer gefällt.” Raum also pointed to the attitude he sees as important for the national team: “Ich mag diese südländische Vollgas-Mentalität – immer mit vollem Herzen, das brauchen wir auch für unser Spiel.”
For Raum, the message is clear enough. He wants to remain part of the Deutschland picture, and he clearly believes the right mentality and the right mood around the team matter just as much as tactical detail. After a bruising World Cup period, that may be one of the biggest lessons he takes forward.
