Grace got to the South entrance of Golden Gate park at 2 p.m. Thursday and the Outside Lands schedule was already shaping the rest of her weekend around Charli XCX. She and her Marin friends pitched tents, slept there overnight, and were back at a nearby donut shop by 4 a.m.
By 10 a.m. Friday, a few hundred people had joined the line for the Friday night main-stage set. Grace said, "I needed to go because I cannot deal with FOMO" and, on the same point, "I would genuinely die. I would literally wither away if I missed Charli bumpin’ dat on me."
Wyoming, Marin, and the 9 a.m. line
Over 24 hours of travel did not keep Wizard Jane and Alex from the front of the crowd. Wizard Jane took three flights from Wyoming, two got delayed, and still made it to San Francisco; Alex drove 36 hours and barely slept to line up early. Their trips show how a single headliner can pull people into place long before the music starts.
At 9 a.m., Christine, 15, and Adelaide, 10, lined up with their dad, adding a younger family track to the same queue. Ron and Cherise were at Outside Lands for their ninth time, which gave the line a veteran layer even before the first concert for the three-day weekend began at noon Friday.
Grayden on teens and adults
Grayden put the crowd split bluntly: "I know a lot of adults want to make it 21+, and say us teenagers make it hell, but I go and I only see people 25 and younger" and "The teens run this. Ron offered the counterpoint from the other side of the age divide: "We feel young and energetic, just as much as they do" and "We have a lot in common with them, we all listen to the same music. This festival is all inclusive to everyone."
