Delta Flight 2204 turned back to Atlanta on Saturday after fumes were reported in the cockpit, triggering a Hartsfield-Jackson-Delta Flight Emergency on a Boeing 757 bound for Orlando. The flight crew declared an emergency shortly after takeoff, and travelers and crew evacuated on a taxiway using emergency slides.
Delta said 199 customers and six crew members were on board. Jordan Conlin, who was traveling with his family, said the pilot announced that fumes had filled the cockpit and later described the landing and evacuation as chaotic.

Conlin said both pilots put on oxygen masks, then described the landing from inside the cabin: "When the pilot’s yelling brace, brace, brace during the landing, I’m just thinking, holy crap, how bad is the situation, actually?" He also said the plane landed smoothly before first responders met the jet on the taxiway.
He later described the evacuation with another line that captured the scene at the door: "Getting off the plane felt amazing because it was just such chaos." His family was later rebooked and arrived safely in Orlando on a replacement flight.

First responders met the aircraft on the taxiway, and ground crews took everyone by bus back to the main terminal. Delta said travelers were being re-accommodated on a replacement aircraft to complete the trip to Orlando, while maintenance crews stayed on site to conduct a full inspection of the grounded Boeing 757.
The aircraft landed safely, but the cockpit fumes led to an emergency return and a slide evacuation before the trip could continue. Delta said the cause of the fumes inside the cockpit had not yet been confirmed, leaving the inspection as the step that will determine whether the plane can return to service.
