Blackburn Rovers FC had to dig deep to stay in the Carabao Cup, but two late substitute goals turned a difficult night into a 2-1 win over Burton Albion. Tony Mowbray’s side trailed for most of the second-round tie before Andri Gudjohnsen and Jayden Fevrier delivered the comeback.
Burton Albion, the League One side, made the stronger start and were ahead after 14 minutes when Zac Scutt opened the scoring. For Blackburn, the warning signs were there before the break, with Corey Addai having to save efforts from Todd Cantwell and Yuki Ohashi to keep the deficit at one.
Blackburn Rovers had to find a response
Early in the second half, Burton almost doubled their lead and Kyran Lofthouse had a far-post effort cleared off the line. That moment mattered because it showed just how close the visitors were to taking complete control of the tie.
Instead, Blackburn Rovers kept going and finally found a way through. With nine minutes to go, Andri Gudjohnsen headed home the equaliser, giving the Championship side the lifeline they had been chasing for most of the match.
Late substitutes changed the tie
Once the game levelled, Blackburn pushed for the winner and got it with two minutes to go. Jayden Fevrier struck late to complete the turnaround and send Blackburn through after a comeback built on patience and persistence.
Mowbray summed it up simply afterwards: “We found a way in the end.” That was the story of the night. Blackburn were not fluent for long spells, but when it mattered most they had enough to overturn a stubborn Burton side and keep their cup run alive.
Blackburn will now find out their second-round opponents on Monday, with the late recovery giving them both progress and confidence after a testing evening.
