Damián Vidagany made the situation plain enough. Aston Villa are in talks for João Palhinha, and they see him as a very good player who would fit their plans. That part is obvious. A club suddenly down a midfielder for the entire season does not have the luxury of being precious. It needs bodies, it needs quality, and it needs them quickly.
What is more interesting is the shape of the deal itself. Bayern Munich may prefer a permanent sale, which makes sense from their side if they are determined to move on from a player who cost €51 million. Aston Villa, though, would be looking at this through a very different lens: a one-year stopgap, something to steady the midfield until Onana returns. Those are not the same conversation, and that is usually where transfer optimism starts to wobble.
No agreement yet means plenty still has to be solved
The key detail here is the one Vidagany did not try to hide. There is currently no agreement. That matters because it stops this from becoming one of those lazy transfer stories where a club is briefly linked with a player and everyone starts speaking as if the shirt has already been printed. It has not. Aston Villa and Bayern Munich are talking, but the gap between “talks” and “done” can be a stubborn one.
There is also a clear mismatch in incentives. Bayern Munich likely still carry the amortized cost of Palhinha’s €51 million fee, which makes any sale more complicated than simply clearing out a squad player. Aston Villa, meanwhile, are operating from urgency. They need immediate cover, not a long, uncertain negotiation that turns into a summer subplot.
That is why the structure will matter as much as the name. If Bayern Munich want permanence and Aston Villa want a short-term answer, then the discussion is not just about quality. It is about timing, valuation and how much compromise each side is prepared to make. Palhinha may well be the right footballer for Villa. The question is whether he is the right solution on Bayern’s terms.
For now, the situation remains exactly where Vidagany said it is: in talks, but not agreed. That leaves Aston Villa with a clear need and Bayern Munich with a player they are trying to shift. In transfer language, that is a start. In real terms, it is still a long way from a conclusion.
