Preston North End reached the Carabao Cup second round after Delano Burgzorg scored the winning penalty in a 4-3 shoot-out against Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park.
The tie finished 1-1 before penalties, but Preston had already shown plenty of resilience. Lewis Gibson was sent off midway through the first half, leaving them to manage long stretches with 10 men. Huddersfield took advantage through Radinio Balker, but Preston recovered and stayed in the contest.
How Preston forced the shoot-out
The equaliser came in stoppage time, when Jusef Erabi turned in Delano Burgzorg's low ball. That goal changed the feel of the tie and gave Preston a route back after a difficult evening.
Once the match moved to penalties, Daniel Iversen became the key figure. He made two saves in the shoot-out, giving Preston the edge before Burgzorg stepped up to score the decisive kick on his debut.
A historic ground and a useful result
The game was played at Goodison Park while work was being completed on Deepdale's pitch, adding another layer to a venue with a long history. Goodison Park hosted FA Cup finals in 1894 and 1910, and also welcomed Pele's Brazil in 1966.
For Preston, the result offered more than just progress. The Lilywhites have been described as needing more transfer business, and this was a reminder of how much fight they already have in the group. Paul Heckingbottom's side will now go into the Carabao Cup second round with momentum after turning a man-down situation into a win.
There was also a neat historical note for Everton, with Howard Kendall having made the 35-mile journey from Preston to sign for the club just under 60 years ago. On this night, though, it was Preston who left Merseyside with the more immediate reason to celebrate.
