Chris Mundy said Lanterns (TV series) was built around a grounded murder mystery from the start, even as the show keeps room for the larger Green Lantern universe. The DCU series centers on John Stewart and Hal Jordan, and its creative split is the point: a detective framework now, bigger lore if the story needs it.
“We just committed pretty early,” Mundy said in an interview with SFX, adding that the team did not spend time debating whether to take that route. He said they wanted to be “firmly walking the Earth first,” then build trust and relationships before widening the scope, a practical choice for a show that is trying to sell both character work and ring-based mythology.
John Stewart and Hal Jordan
Lantern-in-training John Stewart is played by Aaron Pierre, while Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan. The setup gives the series a built-in contrast: one character is learning the rules, and the other can carry the weight of experience, which makes the investigation format work without turning the show into a lore dump.
Mundy said, “We’d be stupid not to use everything that you can do inside the Green Lantern universe,” and added, “They have these abilities. They have the ring. Their world is just bigger, and the way we use our storytelling can be bigger too.” That is the useful part for viewers: the show is not locked into one scale, even if its first move is restraint.
SDCC trailer and Sinestro
During SDCC weekend, the second Lanterns trailer teased Sinestro and appeared to include interstellar-set scenes. That combination sharpens the marketing pitch: the series is still being sold as a grounded mystery, but the footage signals that the production is not treating cosmic material as off-limits.
Mundy said, “We sometimes had to remind ourselves that there's as much or as little sci-fi in it as we want there to be.” That line explains the balancing act better than any trailer cut does. Viewers of Lanterns should read the show as a case study in controlled expansion: start on the ground, then open the door only if the story earns it.

Lanterns hits HBO on August 16, so the practical question is not whether it will go cosmic immediately, but how much of that wider Green Lantern universe the early episodes choose to spend. If the show keeps the murder mystery tight while using the lore sparingly, it has a cleaner entry point than a maximalist superhero series, and that is probably the smarter play.
