This is the ugly little truth of the transfer window: a deal can be agreed, a future can be mapped out, and it can all still come to a halt the moment a medical starts asking uncomfortable questions. Ashley Phillips’ move to Middlesbrough has not been cancelled, but it has been put on hold after concerns were raised during his medical at Rockliffe Park. That is not a minor detail. That is the sort of development that can turn a planned permanent move into something far less straightforward.
Middlesbrough had agreed a £7million deal with Tottenham for the defender, and for a while this looked like one of those clean summer moves clubs love to tick off early. Instead, it now sits in limbo. Phillips informed the club of his decision last Wednesday after an earlier visit to Teesside, but the medical has changed the mood completely. The move remains paused rather than scrapped, yet that distinction only matters if the concerns can be cleared.
A deal that looked set to grow
The key detail here is not just the fee. It is the shape of the deal around it. The transfer was being discussed as one that could rise to £20m, which tells you Middlesbrough were not merely buying a youngster for depth. They were backing a player they clearly believed could develop into something far more valuable. Now there is a serious chance the structure changes entirely, with an initial loan becoming a more realistic outcome than the permanent move both clubs had been working towards.
That would be a shift with obvious consequences. Tottenham signed Phillips from Blackburn Rovers in a £3m move in 2023, and he has since spent the past two seasons on loan at Stoke City, plus a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle. He has had the kind of stop-start early career that makes context essential. Development deals are supposed to carry risk. Medical issues only add another layer, and clubs do not hand out £7million commitments lightly when there are doubts.
Boro’s ambition is not the issue
None of this should be read as Middlesbrough lacking ambition. Quite the opposite. They have already made nine signings this summer and have clearly been pushing hard to strengthen after the bitterness of that 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the play-off final at Wembley. They also had extra financial muscle after the £117m sale of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa to Chelsea delivered a sizeable sell-on fee to Boro. This was a club trying to move decisively, not drift.
That is what makes this pause so frustrating. Middlesbrough have done the work. Tottenham, too, had a deal lined up. But medicals exist for a reason, and once a concern appears, everybody suddenly becomes much more cautious. The question now is whether this is a temporary obstacle or the kind of warning sign that forces a complete rethink.
For the moment, the transfer is still alive. But it is no longer simple, and in football, once a deal stops being simple, it usually stops being cheap, clean or certain. Ashley Phillips to Middlesbrough may yet happen. It just will not happen on the terms anyone first imagined.
