Sean Murray marked the No Man's Sky 10th Anniversary Update by writing that he felt “surprisingly emotional today.” He said Hello Games has seen the game’s highest player numbers since launch and teased Cosmos as the next update.
Sean Murray and No Man's Sky
Murray wrote to fans as Hello Games celebrated the game’s 10-year anniversary. He said, “It’s really a testament to the passion of the team here and of the players for the game, that this year we’ve seen our highest player numbers since launch, and won a TGA and BAFTA for best evolving game.”
No Man's Sky launched on August 9, 2016 on PS4 and PC. Hello Games says players have explored less than 1% of its planets, even though the game contains over 18 quintillion planets. Ahead of release, the studio told IGN it would take 585 billion years to see all of them.
Steam and Hello Games
The anniversary also reflects how far the game has moved from its launch reception. No Man's Sky initially drew tens of thousands of negative reviews on Steam and quickly reached an overwhelmingly negative user rating before later improving to a very positive rating.
Hello Games says it has released 40 major updates for No Man's Sky, all free. The note also said players have made the game their home, created bases, built communities, made friends, and built custom ships.
Cosmos and Light No Fire
Murray’s tease of Cosmos gives current players a clear signal that No Man's Sky will keep receiving support, even as Hello Games also works on Light No Fire. That game is described as one about adventure, building, survival and exploration together, set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth.
For players, the immediate takeaway is simple: the 10th anniversary did not arrive as a closing note. Hello Games tied the milestone to more activity in the game, a new update tease, and a record stretch for player numbers.
