Gowland’s path into that role was built over decades. Born in Stockport in 1963, he began learning the piano at age four, continued his secondary education at Ellon Academy and enrolled at the Royal College of Music in 1980.
He joined the National Opera Studio in 1984, then began his association with The Royal Ballet & Opera in 1985 as a répétiteur on a production of Massenet’s “Werther.” By the time he was 25, he had been appointed Head of Music at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, where he stayed for seven years.

He also worked with the Festival Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne Festival before being invited to join the music staff at the Royal Opera House in 2001. From there, he became Artistic Director of the Jette Parker Artists Programme and held that post from the programme’s foundation through 2026.
