Faith Curran, 11, was found dead in the water at Gore Glen near Gorebridge last Thursday, just under four hours after her family reported her missing. She was pronounced dead at the scene near Shanks Bridge, and police said the death is being treated as unexplained.
Her family described her as a "happy, adventurous, and outgoing girl who enjoyed life" and thanked those who helped with the search for their "support and kindness." They also asked for their "privacy to be respected" as inquiries continued.
Gore Glen last Thursday
Curran was reported missing at about 12:40, and her body was found in the water at about 16:25. The time gap places the search and recovery on the same afternoon, with the discovery coming in the Gore Glen area where walkers use the park and where there are views of the nearby Pentland Hills.
The scene near Shanks Bridge became the focus once she was found. A number of tributes have since been left in the park after her death was first reported on Friday.
Police inquiries in Midlothian
Police said they do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances, even though the death remains unexplained. That leaves the case in the hands of inquiries rather than a criminal allegation, with the focus now on how the afternoon unfolded between the missing report and the discovery.
The next step is a report to the procurator fiscal in due course. For her family, the immediate question is the same one the search left behind: what happened to Faith Curran between about 12:40 and about 16:25 last Thursday?
