Police set up a cordon near The Landor pub in Clapham North after residents reported hearing four or five gunshots around 10pm on Monday. The Clapham shooting left a large crime scene in place on Tuesday morning, with officers still working the area and nearby homes asked to help with footage.
Residents on Willington Road described hearing four or five gunshots, while one nearby witness said he heard two loud bangs as he walked up Landor Road to the shop. He said he saw a man running away, shouting twice, and then saw the victim lying on the floor looking up.
Clapham North on Tuesday, August 11
A large police presence was pictured in Clapham North on Tuesday, August 11, after the report of shooting near a pub the night before. A forensic tent was pictured close to the junction with Landor Road, and specialist forensics teams had started working to secure evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Officers also visited nearby houses with ring doorbells to obtain any available footage. That work turned a street scene into an active investigation site, with the cordon still holding the area in place the next morning.
Willington Road and Landor Road
The account from the resident adds a sharper edge to the police picture. He said he was shaken, and his description of two loud bangs did not match the four or five gunshots heard by other residents on Willington Road. He also said the couple in front of him looked startled before he walked around them.
Lorraine said she was seriously alarmed by the level of gun crime. She also said, “The scenes of body tents, blood and forensic evidence in our communities are horrifying and deeply traumatising. In our inner-city communities, where residents and families live so closely together, the impact of such violence reaches far beyond the immediate crime scene.”
The open question is whether anyone was killed or injured, and the police work on Tuesday centered on building that answer from the scene, the forensic tent, and any doorbell footage that neighbours could provide.
