The draw, which was split across northern and southern sections, also handed Everton an away trip to Preston North End, where manager David Moyes will return to Deepdale. The second-round matches are due to take place in the week commencing Monday, 24 August. That window also includes a live Premier League broadcast of Fulham v Chelsea on Monday, 24 August, which creates a scheduling issue because Chelsea and Fulham are both drawn at home and are not supposed to play at home on the same day.
The nine English clubs involved in Europe this season will enter the competition in the third round, leaving the second round to feature a broad mix of Premier League, Championship and League One teams.
