The Carabao Cup football second-round draw has set up a series of eye-catching ties, with Chelsea paired with Luton, Tottenham meeting Charlton and Newcastle drawn against West Brom.

The draw, which was split across northern and southern sections, also handed Everton an away trip to Preston North End, where manager David Moyes will return to Deepdale. Elsewhere, Brentford were drawn at AFC Wimbledon, Birmingham City will host Ipswich, and Leicester were paired with League One side Huddersfield. Portsmouth were given a home tie against West Ham after losing to them in Saturday's first round.

When the ties will be played

The second-round matches are due to take place in the week commencing Monday, 24 August. That window also includes a live Premier League broadcast of Fulham v Chelsea on Monday, 24 August, which creates a scheduling issue because Chelsea and Fulham are both drawn at home and are not supposed to play at home on the same day.

The nine English clubs involved in Europe this season will enter the competition in the third round, leaving the second round to feature a broad mix of Premier League, Championship and League One teams.

For Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle, the draw offers a straightforward route into the next stage, but it also underlines how quickly the competition can become tricky once TV picks and venue rules are factored in. With the full second-round slate now set, attention turns to how those fixtures are scheduled across the week of 24 August.
