Wisconsin voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday, and my vote will help decide the lineup for the governor’s race and all eight U.S. House of Representatives seats in November. The same primary will also shape the Wisconsin State Assembly and half of the State Senate.
State Representative Francesca Hong and David Crowley are the main Democratic candidates for governor. Hong would become Wisconsin’s first woman governor and first Asian American governor if elected, while Republican Representative Tom Tiffany has already set up the general election as a fight between a “socialist agenda” and “common sense.”

Hong has campaigned on free childcare, cancelling student debt, and abolishing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She has also faced scrutiny over past social media posts supporting Democratic Socialists of America policies such as abolishing the US Senate and abolishing or defunding police.
Hong has said she does not support the national DSA’s full platform. She has also said she is a member of the local DSA chapter in Madison, Wisconsin, but not a national member, a split that leaves her with ties to the group while distancing her from some of its positions.
Tom Tiffany and the House seats
Tiffany’s framing gives the race an early general-election script before the primary is even settled. The winner in the Democratic governor contest will likely face him in November, and the same ballot will help decide all eight U.S. House of Representatives seats.
The broader backdrop is the last two presidential cycles in Wisconsin and Michigan. Former US President Joe Biden won both states in 2020, and US President Donald Trump won both in the 2024 US presidential election.

The Wisconsin contest is also being watched after Tuesday’s result in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, where progressive Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated establishment-backed US Representative Haley Stevens. That outcome sharpened the question of whether Democratic voters in Wisconsin will back a similar lane or settle on a different one.
For voters heading to the polls, the immediate task is simple: choose the nominees that will carry into November. For the Democratic governor race, the unresolved issue is whether Hong or Crowley leaves Tuesday with the stronger claim to the party’s direction.
