Houghton Festival Death: Woman dies at 6.10pm on Sunday

A woman died in a Houghton Festival death at about 6.10pm on Sunday after being found unconscious inside a tent on the last day of the event in Norfolk. The on-site medical team pronounced her dead at the scene after police were called over concerns for her safety.

Houghton Festival said it was deeply saddened and was working with the relevant authorities. The festival is held on the 1,000-acre grounds of Houghton Hall and typically draws around 10,000 people, with music running continuously across its stages through the event.

Houghton Hall in Norfolk

The festival has run at Houghton Hall since 2017, and Craig Richards is among its founders. That long-running format means the final evening is still part of a live event when most attendees are on site, not a winding-down day with the crowds already gone.

Kate Middleton is said to have visited the festival in 2023 and left staff a £700 tip. That earlier visit is separate from Sunday’s death, but it shows the event has drawn attention beyond its regular audience.

Norfolk Constabulary response

A spokesman for Houghton Festival said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a person has passed away at Houghton 2026.” The spokesman added: “Our thoughts are entirely with their family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

The spokesman also said: “We are grateful to our onsite medical team, event response team and Norfolk Constabulary, who all responded immediately.” The festival said it continued to work closely with the relevant authorities to support their enquiries.

Unexplained but not suspicious

A police spokeswoman said: “The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious.” That leaves the death in a formal category that allows enquiries to continue without police treating it as a crime scene.

For the family and anyone at the festival, the immediate fact is that a woman died during the final hours of the event and the official process now runs through those enquiries. The unanswered question is what caused her death at Houghton Festival.
