Taylor Fresh Foods expanded the Taylor Farms Salsa Recall on Aug. 9 after health investigators linked a salmonella outbreak to fresh jalapeños. The recall covers food products made with the affected peppers, including salsa and guacamole. Consumers in 27 states are part of the affected group.
The outbreak had sickened 345 people in the United States as of Aug. 5, and at least 36 people had been hospitalized. The CDC said 93% of 191 people interviewed reported eating at a quick-service Mexican-style restaurant before getting sick, and illnesses ran from June 19 to July 20, 2026.
CDC links jalapeños to outbreak
The CDC identified fresh jalapeño peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors as the source. Coast Citrus Distributors recalled its jalapeño peppers after that finding, and Taylor Fresh Foods then recalled prepared foods made with the peppers. Those products were distributed to Trader Joes, Target, Whole Foods, Chipotle and Qdoba.
Chipotle and Qdoba removed the affected jalapeños from stores. That leaves shoppers and restaurant customers with one practical task: check whether salsa, guacamole or other prepared foods in the home came from the recalled supply chain and avoid eating them.
June to August timeline
The illnesses began before the recall by weeks, with cases starting between June 19 and July 20, 2026 and peaking in early July. By Aug. 5, the CDC had tied the outbreak to the peppers, and by Aug. 9 Taylor Fresh Foods had moved to pull products containing them.
The remaining question is narrow but important: which specific Taylor Fresh Foods products were recalled beyond salsa and guacamole. Until the investigation finishes, the clearest safeguard is to treat any recalled jalapeño-based prepared food from the affected retailers as off-limits.
