Al Murray says the part he hates most about playing the Pub Landlord is going bald for it. At 58, he says he would rather be more shaggy than keep shaving off his locks for the character.

Pub Landlord and 20 years

“It’s the only thing the act has imposed on my life and I really resent it,” Murray said. He added: “There’s always people who don’t get it,” a reminder that the Pub Landlord still comes with baggage after 20 years on stage and screen. Murray also said people think he is a fat, bald b****** because of the character, even though he insists he is not a slaphead.

We Have Ways Fest next month

Next month, Murray will host We Have Ways Fest in Buckinghamshire. Last year on the Saturday of We Have Ways Fest, there were 5,000 people on site including 1,000 contributors, and Murray said: “I still can’t believe it.” He also said: “I wander round the site in a daze because we’ve conjured up this extraordinary feeling.”

Autumn touring returns

The Pub Landlord will resume touring this autumn, so the shaved-head routine is not going away yet. That keeps Murray’s comedy act and his World War Two interests tied together in public, with We Have Ways Fest and We Have Ways of Making You Talk running alongside the stage character rather than apart from it.
