Jackson Police Department questioned a person of interest after Tasia Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson on Aug. 3. The 29-year-old woman from Mississippi was discovered in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance, and police said the case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, said she last saw her daughter on July 26 at a family reunion in Kentucky. She said Fortune was “strong-minded,” “full of laughs and love,” and “better than I had seen her in a long time.”
Terence Anderson Interviewed
Terence Anderson, 65, was said to be a person of interest in connection with Fortune’s death. Detectives said he had been interviewed about the case during a recent court appearance, and Tony Anderson said his brother was taken into custody on an unrelated weapons charge.
Tony Anderson also said Fortune and Terence Anderson have a 5-year-old son together, and that the child lived with Terence Anderson. He said, “Sometimes they’ll have a few occasions where they may get into it or whatever, but that was about it,” and added, “They had their good days, their bad days, but I don’t think he done nothing like that. The autopsy will tell actually what happened to her.”
Family And Police Differ
Spivey said, “This has just devastated us,” and added, “She was at peace.” She also said, “She did not do this to herself.” Police said the circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death remain under investigation, leaving the next step to the State Medical Examiner’s Office, which said it will conduct an autopsy and release its findings once the investigation is complete.
The death investigation now turns on that medical finding and the continuing police work around it. Until the autopsy is finished, Fortune’s family and the people closest to the case are left with interviews, custody questions, and a search for a cause of death that has not yet been publicly established.
