FC Cincinnati head into their third Phase One Leagues Cup game knowing exactly what is in front of them: beat Atlas FC and they can put themselves in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds. Pat Noonan’s side have already collected six points and carry a plus-four goal differential, but they still need one more result to feel secure.
The stakes are straightforward. Leagues Cup Phase One sends only the top four clubs from each league into the knockout stages, and FC Cincinnati are sitting 4th in the table after a 2-0 win over Pumas UNAM on Friday. That result gave them a clean sheet as well as another boost in the standings, but Tuesday night’s visit from Atlas FC at TQL Stadium brings the kind of pressure that still demands a proper finish.
Noonan wants focus, not outside noise
Noonan’s message has been simple: keep the attention on what his own team can control. “Our focus, and what I said to the guys, was it doesn't matter outside of what we do,” he said, underlining that Cincinnati cannot afford to get distracted by the wider permutations around the group.
That is the right mindset at this stage of the tournament. Cincinnati have done the hard part by winning both of their opening matches, and they are one of six MLS clubs to have earned all six available points. But with other teams still to play, the job is not complete until the points are secured on the pitch.
Robinson: win the game and keep the momentum
Miles Robinson was equally clear about the target. “We're definitely just looking for a win,” he said, adding that if Cincinnati can “go out there and win in regulation, it looks good for us.”
Robinson also pointed back to the standard set in the last two Leagues Cup matches. “I think if you just look at the last two games that we played in the League Cup, we have to have that same type of mentality and mindset,” he said. That is a fair summary of where Cincinnati stand: they have built momentum, but they now need to protect it with another composed performance.
Atlas arrive with nothing to lose
Atlas FC are in a different place entirely. They lost their first two Leagues Cup games and have already been eliminated, which means their attention will soon return to Liga MX play. That can make them awkward opponents, because a side with no progression pressure can still play with freedom and pride.
Noonan said Cincinnati should expect a team that is aggressive without the ball. “What we can be prepared for is, I think, a team defensively that has shown to be aggressive, certainly,” he explained. “I think they step up to the ball in a good way.”
He also warned that Atlas can change shape in ways that create problems if Cincinnati are careless. “They have different looks with their structure that can cause us problems if we don't get the defensive organization right,” he said.
That is the key issue for Cincinnati. They have enough control in the standings to know a win would be hugely valuable, but they still have to earn it against an opponent that can disrupt rhythm and test concentration.
If Cincinnati do that, they will have done more than just move a step closer to the next round. They will also confirm that the standards they have set over the first two games can travel into the kind of match where qualification is on the line.
