A fighter with a growing following
Hasan said he feels he is in a unique position because both of his parents are Indonesian and the country has not had a major UFC superstar. He pointed to Indonesia as the fourth-most populated country in the world and said it has been exciting to see fans rally behind him while he competes as a regional professional.
That support has been especially visible around his fight presentation. Hasan often walks out with a cowboy hat, sunglasses and an Indonesian flag, a look he says reflects both sides of his background. He was born in Hawaii, and the entrance style is meant to represent both his American and Indonesian identity.
Why this matters for Hasan
Hasan's rise has been built outside the UFC, but the spotlight now gets much brighter. He said he has long wanted to become the Manny Pacquiao of Indonesia, and Tuesday gives him a direct chance to move closer to that goal. He also noted that the UFC has made a point of building storylines around fighters on the Contender Series, which gives him another reason to capitalize on the moment.
