Sweetwater Valley Little League is three wins away from a trip to the Little League World Series, and the Bonita-based 12U team begins that run on Sunday in San Bernardino.
Representing Southern California in the West Region Tournament, Sweetwater Valley has already navigated a demanding season. The team battled through district, section and state tournaments and lost just one game along the way, which has set up a chance to reach one of youth baseball’s biggest stages.
That path has also come with plenty of context. District 42 is known as a competitive area with a strong Little League history, and Sweetwater Valley already has familiarity with Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino. The group is not walking into the regional round blind, even if the pressure now rises quickly.
Why this Sweetwater Valley group has confidence
Team manager Steve Winnick called this group “a special group of boys,” and said they have put in a lot of hard work while coming together as a team. He said the focus was on getting the players to gel, have fun and trust each other, adding that the team “climbed a mountain together” through off-the-field work that helped build that bond.
That chemistry has shown up in the players’ own comments. Joe Griffin said the team’s confidence is “super high” after beating several strong opponents already. He added that Sweetwater Valley knows the teams ahead will be good, but said the group feels up to the task.
Noah Kirk said, “We’ve been practicing all season for this moment.” Zach Patterson went even further, saying it “feels like it’s destiny for us to win,” while also noting how meaningful the run has been for families connected to the team.
What the West Region road looks like
Sweetwater Valley’s next step is straightforward: win three games and reach the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The team’s opening challenge comes Sunday in San Bernardino, where the West Region Tournament begins.
There will also be a temperature change to manage. Sebastian Pino noted that Bonita is usually much cooler than San Bernardino, saying it can be around the mid-70s at home but reach 103 in San Bernardino. Even so, he said he is nervous but believes the team can beat North Cal.
Sweetwater Valley is trying to follow a Southern California Little League tradition that has produced notable results before. Park View Little League won the World Series in 2009, Eastlake Little League finished second in 2013, Sweetwater Valley placed third in the U.S. Bracket in 2015, and Park View advanced to the tournament again in 2016.
For Sweetwater Valley, the task now is simple to describe and difficult to complete. Three wins stand between the team and South Williamsport, and Sunday’s opener in San Bernardino starts the countdown.
