An inquest into the death of Maesteg rugby player Scot James opened on August 11 at Pontypridd Coroner's Court, with the case still under investigation after a fatal altercation in Turkey.
The court heard that the incident took place on July 5 and began as a verbal exchange before it escalated. Scot James, who was 34, later died on July 26 at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.
Provisional cause of death
A post-mortem examination carried out on August 3 gave the provisional cause of death as a blunt head injury. The circumstances remain subject to inquiry, and Turkish police inquiries are still ongoing.
Because those inquiries have not yet finished, the inquest has been adjourned. The hearing in Pontypridd marked the formal opening of the process, but it did not provide a final conclusion on how the death occurred.
For now, the key details are limited but clear: Scot James was involved in an altercation in Turkey, suffered significant head trauma, and later died in hospital in the UK. The case will return to the coroner's court once the investigation abroad has progressed further.
