Driver dies in M27 Bridge crash near Eastleigh

A driver in his 20s died after his lorry left the M27 westbound slip road near Eastleigh, went through a bridge barrier and came to rest below. Hampshire Police said the crash happened at about 22:00 BST on Tuesday.

The lorry had been travelling on the southbound carriageway of the M3 between junction 13 and junction 14 before it left the slip road. The driver died at the scene and his family has been informed.

Chestnut Avenue closures

Two lanes linking the M3 near Eastleigh to the westbound M27 slip road remain closed, and Chestnut Avenue between Nightingale Avenue and Falkland Road is also shut. Chestnut Avenue runs under the slip road, so traffic in the area is still being diverted away from the point where the lorry fell.

That leaves drivers with fewer routes through the junction area and adds pressure to the roads around Eastleigh. A separate report on another emergency response in the area can be read in this account of St Neots Fire at Marston Road.

Hampshire Police appeal

Hampshire Police have asked for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. The appeal is focused on the moments before the lorry left the slip road, which is the part of the sequence that has not been explained in the released details.

For anyone driving through the junction area, the practical point is simple: use another route if possible and expect the closures to remain in place until the police investigation and road work allow them to reopen. A separate look at another local sports preview is available in this Cambridge United and Barnet season story.
