Emeka Egbuka’s week has gone from manageable to mildly uncomfortable, and that is exactly the sort of practice development a team would rather avoid in midweek. On Wednesday, the Buccaneers receiver limped off the field with trainers after being rolled up on following a reception, turning what had already been a monitored situation into something worth watching closely.
This is not a full-blown crisis, but it is the sort of interruption that can quietly reshape a practice schedule. Egbuka had already sat out Tuesday after Todd Bowles said he did not practice because of soreness in his lower body. Then came Wednesday’s exit, and suddenly the Buccaneers are looking at the possibility of adjusting first-team work if he misses more time.
More reps could be up for grabs
That is where players such as Ted Hurst and Kameron Johnson come into the picture. If Egbuka cannot keep taking part, those first-team reps do not vanish into thin air. Somebody has to take them, and practice time is where competition gets real in a hurry.
Bowles did not sound like someone preparing for a long-term issue, and the latest note is at least a reassuring one: Egbuka will participate in practice on Thursday. Still, the sequence matters. A receiver who misses Tuesday, then gets rolled up on Wednesday and leaves with trainers, is not exactly building momentum.
For now, the Buccaneers can call this a brief interruption rather than a major setback. But in a position group where every snap matters, even a short absence can matter more than people think. If Egbuka is limited at all, the ripple effect is simple: somebody else gets a bigger chance to make a case.
