The European Space Agency mapped Solar Eclipse 2026 on 12 August as the Moon’s shadow crossed Earth from northern Yakutia to central Spain. In central Spain, totality was expected at about 18:30 UTC and to last almost two minutes.

At 16:08 UTC, the shadow began moving from the Sea of Laptev in northern Yakutia. It then crossed the Arctic Ocean, brushed the eastern coast of Greenland and the western coast of Iceland, and reached Spain before ending in the Middle Sea at 19:22 UTC.

Central Spain and Teruel

People in central Spain had the clearest view of the total eclipse. The European Space Agency planned an online broadcast with scientists’ commentary from the Havalambre Astronomical Observatory in Teruel, Spain, in English for people outside the path.

The narrow path mattered because totality did not stretch across the region. Spain was described as the only country where a large number of people could observe the total eclipse, while nearby cities saw only partial coverage: 92% in Paris, 85% in Berlin, 80% in Riga, and 82% in Kaliningrad.

Eye safety on 12 August

Special protection was needed for anyone looking at the Sun outside the brief peak of totality. The guidance also distinguished between direct viewing of the Sun and indirect viewing through an image on another object.

During totality, people in the path could look at the Sun without glasses only at the peak moment. Before and after that moment, eye protection was necessary, because the retina does not signal its damage to the brain and solar retinopathy can follow.

Spain in 2027 and 2028

For people in Spain, the date also fit into a short viewing timeline. Solar eclipses were said to repeat in Spain and nearby countries on 2 August 2027 and 26 January 2028, giving observers two more chances after the 12 August event.

The practical takeaway is simple: totality was limited to a narrow track, so location determined what people actually saw. Anyone outside that path needed proper eye protection or an indirect view, while central Spain had the best conditions for the full event.
