This was not just another summer runout. Manchester United came through their toughest pre-season test so far with a 1-1 draw against PSG, and that matters because it offered something close to a real answer about where this group is right now: decent, competitive and still carrying a few worrying loose ends.
Inside two minutes, PSG had already landed the first blow through Mbaye. That is exactly the sort of start that can turn a friendly into a mess. Instead, United steadied themselves, kept the game alive and found an equaliser through Bryan Mbeumo after Amad Diallo provided the assist. For a side still building fitness, that was a useful response rather than a glamorous one.
Mbeumo delivers, Mount exits early
The scoreline was respectable enough. The performance was probably better. United looked like a team willing to compete rather than simply collect minutes, and that is a decent place to be in a pre-season that still has two more games to come. PSG, by contrast, were in a very different phase. This was only their second and final friendly after a short pre-season, and they still looked sharp enough to force problems early.
But the evening was not all good news for Manchester United. Mason Mount had to go off after 20 minutes with an injury, and that is the sort of setback that immediately drags attention away from the result. Pre-season is supposed to be about rhythm, not fresh worries about availability. United will hope this is nothing serious, because the last thing they need is another stop-start summer for a player they badly want involved.
Amad Diallo, speaking to MUTV after the match, framed it sensibly: PSG are a strong side, United are building fitness and the group is happy to have players back. He also pointed to what comes next, with Leeds in Dublin on August 12 and AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, three days later. Those are the final steps before the season proper gets serious, and this draw at least suggests United are heading in the right direction.
PSG now move on to the Uefa Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria on Wednesday, while United can at least take some encouragement from a decent performance against quality opposition. Mbeumo got the goal, but the bigger takeaway is that Manchester United looked capable of standing up to a proper test. In pre-season, that counts for something.
