Donald Trump’s Kennedy Center overhaul could cost $560 million, and the national symphony orchestra sits inside both renovation paths. Blueprints obtained by Axios show the work would either let the orchestra keep performing on-site or move it offsite for two years, turning the building plan into an operations decision as much as a construction one.
Congress and $257 million
The $560 million estimate is more than double the $257 million already approved by Congress. Delta Consulting Group described the venue’s condition as “state of disrepair is significant and escalating,” which is why the blueprint package goes beyond cosmetic work and into a full funding reset. Consultants also recommended raising an additional $30 million separately to bridge the gap.
One option spreads the work over four years and keeps the National Symphony Orchestra on-site. The other closes the main building for two years and moves the orchestra “offsite through regional partner venues, touring and digital broadcasts.” Under that scenario, the Kennedy Center Honors and the Mark Twain Prize would also relocate during the closure.
Concert Hall and REACH
The plans are not a blanket shutdown. The REACH would remain open under both renovation scenarios, while the Concert Hall would get $24.7 million in work, including attention to its $2 million pipe organ. A separate development plan prepared by JLL calls for the Grand Foyer’s first major makeover since the 1990s, with new furniture throughout, less sheer draperies, and new featured marble flooring.
An additional $48 million would cover restorations across the Opera House, Eisenhower Theater, Family Theater, Terrace Theater, and Theater Lab. The scale suggests the overhaul is being treated less as a single remodel than as a sequence of building systems and performance-space decisions, with each room carrying its own cost and its own schedule pressure.
Paolo Zampolli and White House
Paolo Zampolli, a board member and presidential envoy, said, “I told the White House that I’m going to work with them to see what we can do together.” He has also pushed ideas for Valentino fashion shows, a luxury marina for yachts and tenders, high-end restaurants, and a collaboration to send American arts into space. The renovation is moving inside that broader push to remake the Kennedy Center’s identity as Trump’s control tightens.
The friction is already visible. After Trump branded the venue too woke, replaced trustees with loyalists, and appointed Richard Grenell to run operations, audiences stayed away in droves and performance cancellations mounted before Grenell was ousted. The Washington National Opera later sued the Kennedy Center for more than $17 million in withheld funds, leaving the new blueprint to answer a practical question for the National Symphony Orchestra: keep playing in place, or prepare for a two-year move while Congress decides whether to pay for the larger plan.
