San Diego FC do not need a polite, professional win on Wednesday night. They need a statement. They need goals, because in a tournament built on tiebreakers, survival can hinge on something as cold and unforgiving as goal difference. That is the reality heading into San Diego vs Puebla at Estadio Snapdragon: if San Diego FC want to keep any realistic hope of advancing in the Leagues Cup, a narrow victory may not be enough.
That is what makes this such a strange kind of pressure game. San Diego FC beat Tijuana Xolos on Sunday at a full Estadio Snapdragon, with Bryan Zamble scoring in the first half, and then Mikey Varas made the point even more bluntly on Tuesday: “Como siempre, estamos aquí para ganar” and “Nunca se sabe qué va a pasar en este tipo de torneos.” He is right on both counts. This tournament has six tiebreakers, starts with goal difference and ends with a drawing of lots. In other words, this is not the place for caution.
No room for a modest win
The equation is brutal. San Diego FC sit on a -1 goal difference after a 3-1 loss and a 1-0 win, which is hardly the sort of profile that inspires confidence when advancement depends on more than one result going their way. They need their own result to be emphatic, and they also need a change at the top of the standings. That is the uncomfortable truth of the format: a team can do its job and still be trapped by the arithmetic.
That is why David Vázquez’s words matter too. “Sentimos un gran respeto por Puebla,” he said, before adding, “Estamos listos para salir a buscar la victoria.” Respect is fine. But on Wednesday night, respect must be followed by urgency. Puebla arrive at the bottom of the Liga MX clubs in the tournament, carrying a 0-2 record and a -6 goal difference, which makes them vulnerable on paper. Still, tournaments do not hand out gifts simply because the numbers look bad. San Diego FC will have to force the issue.
And force it they must. The entire logic of this match says the same thing: a win is necessary, but not sufficient unless it comes with conviction. San Diego FC cannot afford a slow, careful night in front of goal. They need pressure, tempo and ruthlessness from the start, because the Leagues Cup is asking them to beat the standings as much as Club Puebla.
