Kyle Chandler nearly walked away from Lanterns in September 2024 before a family read-through changed the decision. He opened the pilot, set it aside, then came back to it with Kathryn and Sydney in Los Angeles and agreed to play Hal Jordan.

September 2024 is the key date because that is when Chandler received the script from his representatives, paused after reading part of it, and then returned to it with Kathryn and Sydney. Chandler said, "Would you guys read this with me? Let’s take characters and just read through the whole thing," and both told him, "You have to do this." He later said, "I was excited from that moment on."
That turn settled the lead role in Lanterns, a series from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The three viewed Chandler as the prototype for Hal Jordan: "It was like, ‘Who do we envision? Kyle!’" Lindelof said. He added, "He’s got the gruff energy, the cynicism, also the nobility, the humor. He’s the entire package."

Chandler’s hesitation was rooted in distance from the material. He did not grow up chasing Green Lantern, was not preoccupied by comic books in suburban Chicago, and had not done superhero genre work before. Lindelof put that plainly: "He hasn’t done superhero stuff or this kind of genre stuff before."
The role itself is not a straight cape-and-cowl assignment. Hal Jordan is presented as an intergalactic cop who must train a next-gen recruit while solving a twisty murder in seemingly placid small-town Nebraska, which means the series is leaning on investigation and character pressure more than spectacle alone.
DC universe step
Lanterns is the third series in the new DC universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, following Peacemaker and The Penguin. Sarah Aubrey also had a longstanding relationship with Chandler through HBO Max original programming, which helped put the project in familiar territory for him.
Chandler has an Emmy for lead actor in a drama series, but he still described Lanterns as one of his rare career swings: "I’ve got like four lightning-in-a-bottle projects that I’ve done in my life that really stand out: Friday Night Lights, Bloodline and Early Edition."
What Chandler chose
The practical result is simple: Lanterns kept a lead actor who had first hesitated, then committed after a read-through that involved the two people closest to him. For HBO Max, that means the series moves forward with Chandler in place and with a cast anchored by Aaron Pierre as an up-and-coming Green Lantern recruit.
What comes next is the script and the screen test of that choice: whether Chandler’s grounded style can carry a DC series built on noir, murder and mentorship rather than the usual superhero frame.
