Motagua remain in control of their own fate after a 1-1 draw with Cartaginés, but the result meant they could not secure an early place in the Copa Centroamericana quarterfinals.
Before the final group-stage match, Javier López’s side had been top of Group D with seven points from three matches. That made the meeting at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés an important chance to finish the job, but the point shared with Cartaginés has pushed the qualification race to the last round.
Motagua still depend on themselves
The key detail for Motagua is that they still depend on themselves. They will now visit Municipal in Guatemala in the decisive round, with the top two teams in the group going through to the quarterfinals.
That keeps the pressure on, but it also means the situation is still in Motagua’s hands. With seven points already collected, they remain well placed in Group D, although the draw has made the final match a must-manage occasion rather than a chance to celebrate early qualification.
A tight Group D race until the end
This is now a genuine three-way or even four-way contest for the two cupos. Motagua’s four-point cushion over the chasing sides has been trimmed by the stalemate, and the final set of fixtures will decide who gets through from a group that has stayed open much longer than Motagua would have wanted.
For Javier López, the task is simple enough: keep his side focused for one more match and make sure the advantages built over the first three games are not wasted. After drawing with Cartaginés, Motagua know there is still work to do, but qualification is still there to be taken.
