Leicester City have confirmed the loan signing of Brighton & Hove Albion teenager Harry Howell for the 2026/27 season, adding another young attacking option to their squad and making him the club's ninth summer arrival.
The move also means Leicester have now signed a second player from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, following Tommy Watson's switch to the club. For Howell, it is the next step in a career that has already taken him from Brighton's academy through to senior football at the Amex Stadium.
What Howell brings to Leicester City
Howell is 18 years old and has described himself as a right winger or a no. 10, with a game built around scoring goals, creating chances and taking defenders on. That profile should give Leicester some flexibility, especially if they want a player who can operate between the lines or stretch the pitch out wide.
He first joined Brighton at the age of seven and has been on their pathway ever since. He made his Under-18s debut against Leicester at 14, then played for Brighton's Under-21s at 15 and scored in a penalty-shootout win over Reading in the EFL Trophy. By the time he made his Premier League debut against Liverpool in April 2025, he had already become Brighton's youngest ever player in the top flight a month earlier.
Why the move matters
Howell's loan is notable because it is not just a depth addition. He has already tasted senior football, and Brighton kept trusting him at several stages last season. He started Brighton's 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in February this year, scored once at Barnsley and added two assists in his two Carabao Cup appearances.
Last month, he also featured in Brighton pre-season, including 45 minutes against Strasbourg and an appearance in a 4-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers. That suggests he remains in a development phase, but also one where he is close enough to senior football that Leicester can reasonably expect him to contribute.
The winger's comments also point to a clear fit. Howell said he had spoken to the manager about where he would play, what to expect and what he needed to do to get into the team. He added that the manager's style suits him, which is encouraging for a young player looking for consistency and minutes.
Brighton background and England recognition
Howell's rise has been steady rather than sudden. In March, he made his Under-19s debut for England, another sign that he is being tracked as one of Brighton's more promising young players. Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has also made it clear that age is not the deciding factor, saying it is about quality and that Howell and Kostoulas both showed unbelievable quality in training.
Lewis Dunk has been equally strong in his praise, calling Howell an incredible talent and saying there is loads more to come from him. That kind of endorsement matters, especially for a player now moving into a fresh environment where competition for minutes will be immediate.
For Leicester, the deal fits a summer that has focused on adding options and upside. For Howell, it is a chance to turn early promise into regular senior football. The next step is simple: make the loan count.
