British Transport Police said a person died near Carrbridge station after being struck by a train shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday, August 12. The incident disrupted rail services between Inverness and London the next day.
Officers and paramedics attended the scene near Carrbridge station, where the person was pronounced dead. British Transport Police said the case is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.
LNER services via Inverness
LNER said services had been delayed because of the incident. The early morning Thursday service from Inverness to London King’s Cross was replaced by a bus service, and the Thursday service no longer called at Inverness, Aviemore, Kingussie, Pitlochry, Perth, Gleneagles, Stirling, Falkirk, Grahamston and Haymarket.
LNER also advised passengers travelling from stations between Inverness and Edinburgh to use rail replacement transport. For anyone booked on those services, the practical change was a switch from train to bus on at least part of the route while the disruption continued.
ScotRail on the Far North Line
ScotRail said trains between Inverness and Wick on the Far North Line were cancelled because of the incident. It added that the cancellations could have knock-on impacts because trains were not available after earlier cancellations on the Highland Main Line.
The remaining question for passengers is how quickly normal train availability can be restored across both operators’ services, since the disruption spread beyond the immediate incident site and into a wider set of routes from Inverness.
