Sam Altman’s Reddit stock stake reached about 12.2 million shares, worth close to $2 billion, even as he has repeatedly said he holds no direct equity in OpenAI. The block, tied to entities affiliated with him, gives the OpenAI CEO a large financial claim on Reddit’s value that sits outside the company behind ChatGPT.
8.7% of Reddit was owned by those affiliated entities around the time of Reddit’s 2024 initial public offering, making Altman the company’s third-largest shareholder. For investors, that means one of AI’s most visible executives has a sizable personal balance-sheet link to Reddit’s stock price even without direct ownership in OpenAI.
Reddit’s 2014 Series B round
12.2 million shares trace back to Reddit’s 2014 Series B round, then were topped up with an additional $60 million in 2021. That is the structure behind the headline stake: a long-running position built over years, not a one-time allocation tied only to the IPO. Some of the shares sit in funds where his economic interest is smaller than the headline number implies.
North of $1 billion was the stake’s value after Reddit’s post-earnings surge in late 2024, a far lower mark than the close to $2 billion figure tied to the IPO filings but still a major position. If the shares stay where they are, the reported block remains large enough to matter to anyone modeling Reddit’s ownership concentration.
OpenAI and Reddit
10% of Reddit’s 2024 revenue came from AI licensing, and and other outlets reported a roughly $60 million-per-year data deal with Alphabet in 2024. Analysis of Reddit’s filings and Adweek’s coverage suggests OpenAI pays on the order of $70 million annually, with multiyear contracts and remaining performance obligations stretching into 2026 and 2027.
That setup creates the story’s friction: Altman has no direct equity in OpenAI, yet he has a large personal stake in Reddit, a company that benefits from AI licensing demand. As of late 2024, he had no ongoing, material economic stake in OpenAI’s core entity, so the exposure runs through Reddit instead of through the company he leads.
The practical takeaway is simple for Reddit shareholders: the ownership profile is not just about one executive’s vote count, but about how much of the reported stake is actually under his personal economic control versus sitting inside funds. The filings show the size of the block; the remaining question is how much of that value is effectively his.
