In 1997, people portraying ghost players emerged from the cornfield there, and MLB later brought the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox to Dyersville on Aug. 12, 2021. A year later, on Aug. 11, 2022, Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Drew Smyly walked on the field before a game against the Cincinnati Reds at the same movie site.
But Thursday’s game was different because it was staged at a permanent ballpark. That gives the venue a more lasting feel and underlines how the complex now extends beyond the farmhouse and ballfield made famous by the movie.
Kyle Schwarber was eager to experience it
For Phillies All-Star Kyle Schwarber, the occasion clearly carried a personal appeal. He said it would be “really cool” to visit a place he remembered from childhood after watching the movie growing up.
He also said, “I’ve never been out there before, so I’m excited to see the corn.”
That captures the appeal of the venue as much as anything. The game is important in baseball terms, but the atmosphere is what makes the Field of Dreams site stand apart.
Why MLB keeps returning to unusual places
MLB has used unusual venues as part of its growth goals, including a military base in North Carolina and a racetrack in Tennessee. The idea is simple: take the game to places that create a wider conversation and a bigger audience.
Keith Rahe said of the site this year, “It looks awesome this year.” That fits the broader picture. The Field of Dreams complex is no longer just a movie landmark; it has become a baseball destination in its own right.
