Marlin Klein made his first professional catch count. The Texans tight end hauled in a 31-yard pass, giving him an early preseason moment that fit the progress he has shown since joining Houston after starting one season at Michigan.
The play was notable not just because it was his first NFL catch, but because it showed the kind of downfield upside the Texans have seen from him through camp. Over the past four practices, Klein has found the end zone at least once and has generally looked like a player who is settling in quickly for a rookie still learning the details of the position.
Encouraging signs through two weeks
Klein was a raw prospect coming out of college, and the Texans have been working through that with him in practice. He caught 24 passes in his lone starting season in Ann Arbor, never found the end zone after Week 1, and arrived in Houston as a tight end with obvious physical tools but plenty to refine.
That has not stopped him from standing out early. Ryans said Klein's trajectory is pointing up and noted that the rookie has been making plays in the passing game while absorbing a lot of information. Ryans said the Texans are throwing a lot at him, but added that he is very encouraged by where Klein is at this point in camp.
At 6-foot-6, Klein brings the size the Texans can use in their tight end room, but the immediate takeaway is more about development than role. He does not look like someone who will be pushing Dalton Schultz for starting reps right now, but he is giving Houston a reason to keep watching.
What comes next
The Texans will begin the second half on offense, and that should offer another chance for Klein to build on his first big play. For a rookie tight end, one 31-yard catch will not define anything, but it does fit the broader picture: a player who is still learning, still refining his game and showing clear signs of progress.
