For a title fight built around grappling credentials, the most interesting early exchange has not happened on the mat. It has come in the buildup, where Mackenzie Dern says the tension around Gillian Robertson has been overstated and, in her words, is based on a simple fact: she has never even met her.
Dern, who became UFC champion this past year, is scheduled to defend her title against Robertson at UFC 330 in the 115-pound division. On Tuesday, Dern told MMA Fighting that she has nothing against the Canadian strawweight and was surprised by the idea that Robertson had suggested otherwise. Her point was not just that the rivalry feels manufactured, but that she does not usually spend much time in trash talk anyway.
“It’s funny that people say that because I felt like she was the one who was [trying to build the tension],” Dern said. She added that Robertson had been the one talking about submissions and using clips from Joe Rogan’s podcast to frame the matchup. “I didn’t know who she was,” Dern said. “I have nothing against her. I’ve never even met her.”
Why Dern likes the matchup
If the personal side of the build-up feels thin, Dern is clearly more interested in the stylistic one. She said she likes the fight because Robertson is “a jiu-jitsu girl,” and because the matchup gives her another chance to test herself against a grappler on a run. Robertson enters UFC 330 on a five-fight win streak, and Dern made it clear that is part of the appeal.
“I like fighting people who are on win streaks,” Dern said. “I like trying to stop their win streak. That’s always a good, fun challenge for me.” She also pointed back to her win over Virna Jandiroba, noting that Jandiroba was on a four or five fight win streak when Dern faced her. For Dern, the pattern is obvious: she wants the toughest momentum she can find.
That fits who she has been for most of her career. Dern has spent much of her life as a competitive grappler and has won multiple grappling titles, so it makes sense that she is drawn to a fight that can be decided by who is sharper in the clinch, on the ground or in scramble situations. The matchup may not need a personal grudge to carry interest. It already has a competitive one.
That is also what makes the first title defense matter beyond the back-and-forth. A champion’s first defense always tells you something about where she stands, and Dern is choosing an opponent with momentum rather than avoiding one. If she can stop Robertson’s streak, it will say as much about her readiness to stay at the top as anything said in the pre-fight comments.
