Robert Saleh has ended the uncertainty at the top of the Tennessee Titans’ quarterback depth chart by naming Cam Ward the starter, but the more interesting preseason story now sits one rung lower. Hendon Hooker is part of a backup battle that also includes Will Levis and Mitchell Trubisky, giving the Titans another competition to watch closely in training camp.
Ward’s position was not exactly a surprise after his start to camp, when he completed 9-of-16 passes with two touchdowns on Day 1. The Titans have entered a second season with Ward and a new team around him, and Saleh made it clear that the former first-round pick is the guy they will build around in the starting role.
Saleh settles the starting job
“Cam Ward is our starting quarterback... We’ll give Mitchell Trubisky and Will Levis every opportunity behind him,” Saleh said.
That line matters because it confirms the Titans’ priorities before preseason games begin. Ward is fixed as QB1, while the competition behind him is now about who can secure the most trustworthy role if the depth chart is forced to be tested during the year.
For a team trying to establish rhythm early in a new season, that kind of clarity is useful. The Titans do not need a public guessing game at the top of the order, but they do still need answers on who can step in if the situation changes.
Hendon Hooker and the backup picture
Hooker’s presence in the discussion adds another layer to a battle that already includes two experienced quarterbacks. The Titans have not hidden the fact that Will Levis and Mitchell Trubisky are being given every opportunity, and that means every camp rep matters.
For Hooker, the challenge is simple: make enough of an impression to stay in the conversation as the preseason moves on. In a room where the starter has already been named, the value now comes from reliability, sharp decisions and taking advantage of the snaps that remain available.
