Ford unveiled the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible in Ferndale on Friday, putting the 795-horsepower Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC in open-air form ahead of the Woodward Dream Cruise. The drop-top version is expected to arrive in spring 2027 and start at around $110,000.
Dark Horse SC Convertible
The new model uses a 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 and makes 660 pound-feet of torque. Ford said the convertible can lower its soft top automatically in about eight seconds when the car is stationary, and the body wears six-piston 16.5-inch Brembo front brakes, four-pot 14-inch Brembo rear brakes, Pirelli P-Zero tires and a wing sprouting from the trunk lid.
The Dark Horse lineup now spans four models. The Dark Horse SC Coupe is priced at $105,485, while the base Dark Horse starts at $66,075 with 500 horsepower.
Corktown preview
At a media sneak peak in Corktown ahead of the Ferndale unveiling, Ryan Shaughnessy said, “We’ve leveraged (SC) to elevate the Mustang brand into the premium sportscar space to go head-to-head with the world's elite sportscar competition like the Porsche 911, BMW, Mercedes”. He added, “We designed it to beat them. We’ve created an entry into ultra-high performance on Mustang for those customers who aspired to the Mustang GTD. There is this massive opportunity for a... diverse, affluent customer that has historically gravitated towards European premium sportscars, but now they want something different.”
Mark Rushbrook said, “If the Coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula.” He also said, “It's just pure fun, fast, freedom.” Arie Groeneveld said, “Rather than pursuing ultimate lap times, we were after the ultimate, top-down grand touring machine. Open air, the powertrain, the sound, the performance. Just joy.”
Mustang premium push
The convertible shares SC Coupe specs with the model that competes against the Mercedes-AMG SL55 and SL63. Ford is pairing the premium grand touring pitch with an entry into ultra-high-performance competition, a line that now sits between the Mustang brand’s lower-priced models and the Mustang GTD.
The price gap runs from the $66,075 base Dark Horse to the $110,000 convertible, with the SC Coupe in between. That places the new convertible squarely in the six-figure sportscar space Ford says it is targeting, while its spring 2027 arrival gives buyers a long wait after the Friday unveiling.
The engineering question now is how much of the Dark Horse SC Coupe changed to create the convertible version, beyond the roof and the automatic top mechanism. Ford has put the open-air car on display; the next step is whether buyers want the grand touring version or the coupe-style performance model.
