Geordie Keating survived the final episode after being shot, and Robson Green is still on screen because the writers backed away from killing him off. The change landed as Grantchester closed after 11 seasons, turning the ending into a survival story instead of a farewell.
Daisy Coulam said the team kept pushing the death idea in the story meeting and could not make it work. “I mean the amount of times we tried to be like, ‘He should die. He should definitely die’. I mean he died probably about four times in the story meeting and we just couldn't do it. It would just be too big.”

Coulam also said the final beat needed a different emotional register. “You're like ‘No, because you need that moment at the end’. You need hope and you need joy because it's a (platonic) love story and you need your two lovers alive at the end, I think.” That choice kept Geordie alive after the finale shooting and avoided turning the last episode into a hard stop for a character viewers have followed for 12 years.
Grantchester’s long run made the decision heavier than a routine cliffhanger. The show had already been announced last year as ending after its 11th series, so the writers were not leaving themselves room to revisit the choice later or soften it with another season.
Robson Green in Northumberland
Robson Green has moved on to filming Northumbria Mysteries, where he plays Joe Ruby. The series is shooting in Northumberland and North Tyneside, with the cast and crew seen in Alnwick, Morpeth and Rothbury, and scenes also shot at The Red Lion pub in Earsdon near Whitley Bay.
That makes the Grantchester ending more than a neat piece of script surgery. ITV bosses almost killed off Geordie Keating, but the writers decided that hope and joy required him to survive, and the result gives Green a clean handoff from one crime drama to the next without dragging Grantchester into a grim final note.
