Isaiah Sategna III spent the end of the 2025 season weighing a move to the NFL or one more year at Oklahoma. In the end, he chose to stay, and that decision gives the Sooners something valuable as camp opens: their top returning receiver, primary return specialist and a player taking on a bigger leadership role.
Sategna entered the 2025 season as a preseason second-team selection and backed it up with the best production of his Oklahoma career. In 13 games, he caught 67 passes for 965 yards and scored eight receiving touchdowns. He was Oklahoma's top receiver a year ago, and now he enters his final season of eligibility as the leader of the receivers room.
Why Sategna returned
Sategna said there was a lot behind the choice, but his explanation came down to faith and loyalty. He said he prayed about the decision and felt he was being directed to stay at Oklahoma, adding that he still has more to give and believes OU was the right place for him.
That kind of return matters for a team that has multiple newcomers at the position. Virginia transfer Trell Harris, Texas transfer Parker Livingstone, Washington State transfer Mackenzie Alleyne and a freshman quartet are all in the mix, but Sategna gives Oklahoma a proven target who already understands the offense and the expectations that come with it.
Leadership is now part of the job
The production is only part of Sategna's value. What stands out this summer is the growth in how he carries himself. He said he has always been the type of player who lets his play do the talking, but this year he is being more vocal. He also acknowledged that approach has come with some growing pains, even as he said he has gotten better at it.
That growth has been noticed inside the program. John Mateer said the team has challenged Sategna and that he has responded well as a leader, while also saying Sategna is really helping to bring the entire room together. Emmett Jones also called him a huge influence, and Brent Venables said in March that Sategna was his favorite player on the Sooners' roster last season during the College Football Playoff run.
For Oklahoma, the return is about more than one receiver staying put. It gives the Sooners continuity at a position group that is still adding new pieces, while also keeping a player who can affect the game both as a receiver and in the return game. If Sategna's production holds and his voice continues to grow, Oklahoma should benefit from both.
