Connor Bazelak is set to step in if Jake Browning cannot go in Friday night’s preseason game against the Jets, with the Buccaneers choosing caution after Browning tweaked his back in a non-contact drill yesterday.
The update came after Tony Castricone said Browning had “tweaked” his back, while Todd Bowles said after Thursday’s practice that it was possible Browning could still play. Even so, the clearest plan is simple enough: if Browning is ruled out, Bazelak gets the start.
A small setback in a solid camp
Browning had been having a solid camp after a slightly shaky spring in OTAs, so this is not the kind of development that changes the bigger picture. The concern appears to be about availability for one game rather than anything more serious, and that is why the Bucs are not treating it as a major long-term issue.
As Castricone put it, it does not seem like there is great concern that what happened to Jake is going to be a long-term thing. That matters because the team can manage a preseason absence without panic, especially with Baker Mayfield not playing against the Jets.
Why Jalon Daniels could see more time
If Bazelak starts and the Bucs keep rotating quarterbacks as planned, Jalon Daniels could also get more snaps on Friday night. In a game like this, the priority is less about the result and more about making sure the quarterbacks behind Mayfield get meaningful work.
For Bazelak, the opportunity is straightforward: start if needed and keep the offense moving. For Browning, the target is just to get back to full health without turning a minor tweak into anything more than a brief preseason interruption.
