Ben Liu, a new mutant whose reality-warping powers have been partially hijacked by the shadowy foe, adds the clearest mechanism in the issue. The attack is not just magic with no rules; the foe is using a mutant power set to distort what the X-Men perceive, then hiding behind illusions that initially look real. The Emma Frost demon and the Penumbra attack first read like a direct assault, then the X-Men learn they were illusions.
