Jon Favreau set Oswald for a February 2027 Disney+ debut after showing the first footage at D23. The three-part miniseries brings Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back into Disney’s orbit in a live-action/animated format, with Kathryn Hahn, Ravi Cabot-Conyers and Steve Martin in the cast.
Favreau said Sergio Pablos led the animation team on the project, calling him “the legendary Spanish animator whose credits include “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Treasure Planet” and his own, underrated feature “Klaus,” led the animation team on “Oswald.”” That makes the series more than a nostalgia exercise: the release window is now specific, and Disney can start shaping the rollout around a title with a fixed premiere month instead of a vague future slot.
D23 Shows the First Footage
The footage Favreau presented at D23 matters because it was the first public look at a series that has been in motion long enough to include a three-week shot at Disneyland last year. In industry terms, that usually signals a project moving from development language to a real launch plan, with the picture and the calendar now pointing in the same direction.
Favreau also tied the reveal to the character’s history. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927, then appeared in a series of shorts released by Universal between 1927 and 1938. Disney CEO Bob Iger brokered a deal with Universal in 2006 to return Oswald to Disney, and this series is the first major screen use of that return in a format built for Disney+.
Three-Part Format, New Stakes
A three-part miniseries is a tight structure, not a sprawling one, so each episode has to do real work: introduce the character, establish the new live-action/animated approach, and deliver a reason for Disney viewers to care about Oswald beyond archive value. That is the practical shape of the project now that the premiere month is set.
For viewers, the useful change is simple. The project has moved from a tease at D23 to a dated Disney+ arrival, and Favreau has already put Sergio Pablos, Kathryn Hahn, Ravi Cabot-Conyers and Steve Martin on the record as part of the package. In a market crowded with franchise titles, a locked February 2027 debut gives Disney something concrete to sell instead of a promise in motion.
