Zuffa Boxing’s release of Oleksandr Gvozdyk after his February knockout loss to Radivoje Kalajdzic underlines just how unforgiving the new promotion is prepared to be with older fighters. The move arrived in April, when Gvozdyk received a termination email from Zuffa Boxing. It is a clear sign that the promotion is building a new company with little appetite for carrying fighters whose market position has weakened after a loss, especially when the defeat affects rankings, public interest and matchmaking options all at once.
Why the release mattered
For Gvozdyk, the timing is important because it followed a defeat that already changed the discussion around his career. A fighter can still be respected after a loss, but once results start to stack up, the landscape shifts quickly. Gvozdyk had also lost a decision to David Benavidez in 2024, which only added to the pressure around where he fit in the division.
