Bristol City are still in talks with Jason Knight over his future, but sporting director James Ellis has stopped short of guaranteeing the captain will remain at Ashton Gate when the transfer window closes. Knight has been a regular for Bristol City since signing in 2023 and has already passed the mark of more than 140 games for the club. With the window still open, the picture is not settled yet, and Ellis made clear that a final decision is still to come.
Ellis keeps the door open
Speaking to Radio Bristol on Saturday before Bristol City's game against Millwall, Ellis said the club want Knight to stay, but would not go as far as promising that outcome.
“We're still all in conversations about the future, we would like Jason to be part of what we're doing here, but the situation is where he is with his contract where by the time the window closes we'll all understand where we're at,” he said.
That is the key point for Bristol City. The club would clearly like to keep one of their most reliable players, but Knight is also approaching the final stage of his current deal, with next summer set to bring another decision if nothing changes before then.
Why Knight matters so much
Ellis was even more direct about the midfielder's importance to the club. “Make no bones about it, Jason Knight is important to me, he's important to Michael [Skubala], he's important to this football club, and we'll all together - because Jason's been really, really good - make the right decision that suits everyone,” he said.
That is the tone Bristol City will hope can guide the discussion. Knight is not simply another squad player; he is the captain, a regular starter and a central figure in the way the club want to move forward.
There is also recent transfer context around the midfield to consider. Earlier this week, Max Bird was sold to Birmingham City, which makes the handling of Knight's future even more relevant as Bristol City continue to shape the squad.
So the answer, for now, is that Bristol City are trying to keep Knight rather than letting him drift towards the end of his deal. But until the window closes, Ellis has made it clear there can be no guarantee.
