The Browns have their first preseason quarterback order in place, and Deshaun Watson will be the starter when Cleveland opens against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. Todd Monken announced the decision during Wednesday’s practice as the team moved through its second full week of training camp.
The bigger picture, though, is that the Browns depth chart is still very much a work in progress. The quarterback competition between Watson and Shedeur Sanders remains unsettled, and the same is true at several other spots as the offense continues to sort itself out.
What the Browns are sorting through
Watson getting the start in the preseason opener does not resolve the battle under center. It simply gives the Browns a first look at how the offense will operate in game action, with Sanders set to start the second preseason game on Aug. 22 against the Buffalo Bills. That sequence gives both quarterbacks a chance to show where they stand before the evaluation process tightens.
The offensive line and receiver groups are also still being sorted out in camp, which makes the first preseason game useful for more than just the quarterback rotation. During camp, Spencer Fano took over as the starting left tackle, giving Cleveland another notable development up front as the Browns depth chart continues to settle.
There have also been signs of role movement in the backfield and passing game. In the just-completed week of camp, Dylan Sampson was heavily involved in the pass game, a reminder that the Browns are still testing different ways to use their skill-position players as they move toward the regular season.
Why this matters now
For the Browns, the preseason opener is less about final answers and more about establishing the first competitive order. Watson gets the initial nod, Sanders gets the second game, and the rest of the offense is still working through jobs and roles. That makes Saturday an important checkpoint for a team that has spent two full weeks trying to define its Browns depth chart before the real games begin.
It also keeps attention on how Cleveland handles its most important position. The starter for Week 1 has not been decided by this preseason schedule alone, but every snap matters when the competition is still open and the supporting cast is still being arranged.
