Mecole Hardman Jr. is suddenly in a familiar kind of late-summer fight: he looks useful enough to stay in the conversation, but not yet secure enough to feel safe on the Buffalo Bills’ 53-man roster. With the Aug. 30 cut-down date approaching, the former Kansas City Chiefs wideout is one of the more intriguing bubble players in camp.
That matters because the Bills are likely to keep five wide receivers, which means there may only be one open spot available. Hardman’s case is made stronger by his seven seasons of NFL experience and three Super Bowl wins, but his path still depends on what he does over the next two-and-a-half weeks.
On Friday, Joe Buscaglia included Hardman in his latest 53-man roster prediction. That alone suggests the veteran has a real chance to stick. But it also underlines how tight the competition is, especially with Buffalo still sorting through receiver and returner roles before final decisions are made.
Why Hardman remains on the roster bubble
John Green noted that “so far through two-and-a-half weeks, Hardman Jr. has been fairly solid to start training camp” and that he has even “got some run as the first-team punt returner for Buffalo.”
That is exactly the kind of usage that keeps a player alive in roster battles. Hardman is not just being evaluated as a receiver; he is also being asked to help in the return game, where value can be as important as raw offensive production.
Green also pointed out that if Hardman can make a few plays in preseason, “both in the return game and as a receiver,” then his chances of sneaking onto the final 53-man roster “will increase dramatically.” The flip side is equally clear: if he falters, his chances of being cut rise just as quickly.
The punt return battle may decide it
Buscaglia explained that the Bills are at “our first change from the pre-camp 53-man roster projection,” and the return job has become part of the wider puzzle. He said Skyler Bell “was rarely involved in punt return reps” during open practices and added, “Now, Bell is injured.”
That opens the door a little wider for Hardman, even if the role is a narrow one. Buscaglia suggested that “even though Hardman may only be a onesie position as a punt returner, they might have to keep him and try to work him into a handful of offensive snaps to make it worthwhile.”
For a team in win-now mode, that kind of experience can matter. Hardman has played in 82 games, caught 178 passes for 2,302 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. More importantly, he also brings Super Bowl pedigree, and that is the sort of detail that can tip a close decision when a roster spot is not guaranteed.
On Saturday, the Buffalo Bills opened their preseason against the Carolina Panthers, and those games may now carry extra weight for Hardman. His next few outings could determine whether he survives the final trim or becomes one of the notable names left off the roster when the Bills reach Aug. 30.
