Dolly Parton Dollywood absence changed the tone of Dollywood’s Aug. 14 NightFlight Expedition dedication ceremony. She was scheduled to appear in person, but canceled the day before because she had been dealing with health issues for nearly a year.
The event still went forward, and Eugene Naughton led the kickoff festivities in her place. Parton joined by video instead of appearing on site, turning a launch meant to showcase the park’s newest major attraction into a reminder that the face of the project could not be in the room.
NightFlight Expedition costs $60 million
$60 million is the price tag tied to NightFlight Expedition, which Dollywood describes as its largest single investment and most technology-advanced ride. For a park launch, that scale makes the dedication ceremony more than a ribbon-cutting: it is the public handoff for the company’s biggest capital bet, one that had already slipped from its original May 15th target and then again from June.
The ride itself is built around four ride experiences in one, housed in Hidden Hollow Aviation and presented as the park’s longest ride. Twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley guide the story through vivid multimedia projections, dynamic onboard and offboard audio, special lighting effects, water, and other immersive elements.
Eugene Naughton leads kickoff
“I think we're going to shock a lot of people. This ride is the most that we've ever spent in an attraction in our history. It's the biggest and most technology-advanced ride we've ever done,” Eugene Naughton said at the dedication ceremony. He also said, “It represents our 11th coaster on property, but it's much more than just a coaster.”
Naughton’s role mattered because the ceremony was supposed to project certainty around the attraction’s opening after the earlier delays. Instead, the company had to stage its biggest ride launch without the person most associated with Dollywood’s identity, even though Parton still addressed the crowd remotely.
Parton on safety first
“Eugene, I've had my butterfly wings a-flappin' since May 15th when we were due to open the first time, and again in June,” Parton said in the video shown during the event. She added, “But I know we have to make sure that this is the safest since it is the newest and most expensive ride that we have ever added to Dollywood.”
That is the real business read on the day: Dollywood opened NightFlight Expedition only after two missed launch dates and with Parton absent from the room. The ride is open now, but the story sitting on top of it is whether her nearly yearlong health issues will keep her off future in-person appearances tied to the park’s biggest projects.
