Daniel Lissing left When Calls the Heart after Season 5, and Jack Thornton was written out by death in a landslide. The move ended a run that began in 2014 and forced Hallmark Channel to steer the series without the character at the center of Elizabeth Thatcher’s story.
In a Facebook Live aftershow, Lissing said, "Circumstances arose for me where I needed to leave 'When Calls the Heart' for reasons that are very personal to me". He also said, "I went to Hallmark and they were nothing but supportive of me. I went to the girls and they were nothing but supportive of me."
Season 5 finale landslide
Jack Thornton died off-screen in the Season 5 finale, shortly after his wedding to Elizabeth Thatcher. Lori Loughlin said the writers faced a "tricky decision" and "We talked about it and then we talked about it again" before landing on what she called "the only way he would leave her is in death".
That left the creative team choosing between recasting, a move to the Northern Territories, or a permanent exit. Hallmark’s team ruled out recasting because of Daniel Lissing and Erin Krakow, and it also weighed having Jack relocate and asking Elizabeth to move on without him.
Nadia and Season 6
Two years later, Lissing said he had no regrets about leaving. He added, "It's funny the way the world works. If I had stayed on the show, and been there during Season 6... then I wouldn't have met Nadia" and followed that with, "How can I look at my future wife and say, 'Oh, I should've stayed on this job?'">
He also said, "She's my life, you know? That's my personal life and that's exponentially more important to me than a job." For a hit Hallmark Channel drama, that is the practical takeaway: the show absorbed the loss, while Lissing framed the decision as a tradeoff he would still make.
Vancouver and Uncle Gary
Lissing said, "Sometimes, I really miss living in Vancouver, getting picked up by my driver, Uncle Gary" and added, "It is a family, and that aspect of things I really miss." He closed on the business side of the relationship with, "My time with Hallmark was nothing but positive and I'm truly grateful to be a part of it."
The unresolved question is the one Lissing never answered on the record: what specific personal circumstances pushed him to leave after Season 5. What the series did answer was its own problem, and it answered it decisively by killing Jack Thornton rather than pretending the role could be swapped without changing the show’s core dynamic.
